Cultivation of hydrocarbon-tolerant microalgae in flowback wastewaters produced during hydrofracking of impermeable rocks

چکیده

Huge amounts of Wastewaters (WWs) are produced yearly by the hydrofracking impermeable rock formations for extraction oil or natural gas. Flowback (FWs) characterized high contents inorganic contaminants and hydrocarbons thus representing a relevant threat environment. In this work three hydrocarbon-tolerant microalgae have been cultivated in flowback water generated during hydraulic fracturing to investigate their growth kinetics. All strains could grow FWs irrespective presence hydrocarbons. Biomass productivity varied significantly among strains. Ochromonas danica achieved specific rate equal 0.386 day-1 exponential phase maximum biomass 39 mg L-1 after 11 days batch cultivation. Scenedesmus dimorphus was capable achieving concentration 0.5 g about 25 On contrary, Prototheca zopfii strongly affected FWs. Ultimately, study demonstrated that thrive represent suitable candidates future research activity aimed verify possibility bio-remediate these harmful WWs.

Advanced Treatment of Meat Processing Wastewaters Using Microalgae

Introduction: Effluents of Meat processing are one of the untreated wastewaters containing high volumes of polluted components even after the primary and secondary treatments. The high cost of using the advanced treatment methods of the wastewaters has led the industry owners to release them in the nature without effective removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. In this study, an economic advanced ...

Reappraisal of hydrocarbon biomarkers in Archean rocks.

Hopanes and steranes found in Archean rocks have been presented as key evidence supporting the early rise of oxygenic photosynthesis and eukaryotes, but the syngeneity of these hydrocarbon biomarkers is controversial. To resolve this debate, we performed a multilaboratory study of new cores from the Pilbara Craton, Australia, that were drilled and sampled using unprecedented hydrocarbon-clean p...

Efficiency of Microalgae Scenedesmus in the Removal of Nitrogen from Municipal Wastewaters

Background: Due to the high content of nitrogen in the municipal wastewaters, this study evaluated the efficiency of Scenedesmus as an important microalgae in the removal of nitrate from wastewaters and its application as an appropriate culture medium. As algae have high resistance to temperature and pH changes, they can absorb low concentrations of nutrients and need simple low-cost technolog...
